A visual archive tracing the evolution of the witch archetype from 1324 to today. We explore the historical reasons women were persecuted during the witch hunts: for being poor, for believing, for knowing, for aging, for gathering and, for simply existing. The book contrasts the past and the present through a feminist and social justice lens.
This unfolds through two distinct yet overlapping page designs — gradually blending into one another, alluding to how the same judgments that once condemned witches still linger today. Through text and striking juxtapositions of imagery from Western visual culture, we reveal how these patterns continue to impact women, LGTBIQ+ communities, BIPOC+ people, and many others. We examine legal trials and social judgement as the roots of fear and tools of oppression.
